How Can You Move For Hunger This Holiday Season?

 
During the holiday season, it’s easy to reach out and give to those in need, but there are families and individuals struggling with hunger and homelessness year-round in America. According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, there were a total of 552,830 people experiencing homelessness on a single night in 2018. In addition, research from WhyHunger states that 14.3 million U.S. households are suffering from food insecurity, with 5.6 million of those labeled as “severe.” The property management industry can do a great deal to help those affected by hunger and homelessness, which is why Rent Manager has partnered with Move For Hunger to highlight the ways you and your tenants can make a difference.
 

What is Move For Hunger?

Move For Hunger is a national nonprofit organization that has created a sustainable way to reduce food waste and fight hunger. The organization works with the moving and multifamily industries to provide a means for people to donate food to local food banks and pantries when they move. Members of Move For Hunger’s network also organize community food drives, participate in awareness campaigns, and create employee engagement programs.
Move For Hunger began in 2009 after its founder—who worked in the moving industry—noticed how many non-perishable food items were going to waste during moves. Initially, the organization only worked with moving companies, but two years ago, the organization engaged with the multifamily space after discovering how much quicker moving turnarounds happened there versus the real estate industry.
Today, Move For Hunger works with more than 1,000 relocation companies and over 1,400 multi-family property management companies across the United States and Canada. They have donated over 13 million meals (not including this year’s holiday donations), totaling more than 16 million pounds!
 

How can you get involved?

Move For Hunger’s greatest passion is to stay local and work with food banks near participating multi-family properties. When donations stay local, you see the impact it has on the community first-hand, and you know you’re helping eliminate hunger in your city, for your neighbors. In order to spread their message, Move For Hunger needs the help of property managers and owners everywhere to encourage their residents to donate their food when they move.
